The Fish of Covet
The Fish of Covet
On the banks of Covet Cove, or so I have been told,
There swam a giant fish richly scaled in gold.
In the depths of bluish sea beneath the roiling tide,
A stunning beauty hid for whom all men vied.
The story spread, in whispered tones cleverly controlled,
For each aspired the chance to own alleged gold.
All the folk of Covet rushed in peril haste to find,
The rumored fish, the special one-of-a-kind.
A shadow swam beneath the waves, viewed by man of greed.
Before his eyes she splashed swift with lightning speed.
On the shore he heaved a sigh. It seemed the perfect size.
Rejoiced did he, for now at last he could claim his prize.
In raptures of ambition he baited sharpened hook,
In vain desire he wily undertook,
To deceive the gleaming fish with artful ruse,
Tempting gracious gesture, she dared not refuse.
With hopeful dreams yet dire misgivings she dared the bite.
Snagged she struggled while he pulled with dreadful might.
Thrashing, floundering she realized his greed much too late,
Betrayed by want she wrestled impending fate.
In joy came he t’ward his coveted catch, eyes alight,
But short-lived was his pride and ruthless delight.
For gleaming scales in sunlight day, to his great dismay,
Were not gold but only those of boring grey.
In wicked spite he slashed her loose. How he had been charmed.
Bitter, outraged, into the sea he tossed her.
Bitter too she felt abused, the gleaming fish quite harmed.
Blinded by greed, searching for more, fooled they both were.
There they parted by the banks of the sandy shore,
The fish to nevermore in bright hooks believe,
And he not to query established lore, sought once more,
Coveted gold which regarding bliss, would deceive.
On the banks of Covet Cove, or so I have been told,
There lived some folk, greedy fools in search of gold.
And in their haste to gain supposed treasure and delight,
They ignored the life they might crush in hope to find it.
